We are given a
body in which our mind and spirit dwell for a period. It's our
responsibility to take care of that body so it can serve the mind and
spirit. 'Course the body has its own needs and desires too. Food, water,
and sex are needed for survival. I like the term wholeness. I use it to
describe the incredible satisfaction when all parts of our humanness
(mind, body, spirit, and consciousness) come
together to make life grand.
Attaining wholeness isn't always easy. It's a work in progress for me.
Sometimes it's three steps forward and two steps backward. But there's
always some progress. |
| For me, I have my own bodywork. I do my slow and gentle
yoga every other day. I garden so in the summer, I get a good workout
every few days. I take supplements for a variety of reasons.
As a child of four, in 1954, I contracted polio. I was very fortunate
because my mother had read of the Australian nurse Sister Kenny, and her
care of polio victims in the bush. She didn't allow them to use their
muscles until the disease had passed. Her experience had taught her that
during polio the muscles go into a spasm and using them made them stretch.
The problem was that the disease made the stretch stay and the muscles
couldn't go back to their original size and shape. In the early 1990s, I
developed post-polio syndrome. At one point, even on four prescription
medications, I was unable to walk without assistance from my husband or a
friend. I got serious about researching natural helps for my problem. I
found them, and they make up most of my supplements. I was also diagnosed
with Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, arthritis, and carpal tunnel.
Today, I live a mostly normal life with some self-imposed restrictions.
I break jobs into fifteen minute segments followed by fifteen minutes of
rest. I don't do much really hard exercise but instead yoga. I have one of
those glider exercise machines that I use too. |

So what about food? I'm not a vegetarian. I try to eat whole foods. I
can't afford all organic or organic, natural meat. We do the best we can.
our garden provides organic veggies during the summer up until about
Christmas. How Christmas? I plant cold weather plants in August and pray
for no below 20 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures until mid-December. I also
can and freeze as much as I can in the summer. As far as meat goes, my
husband and I will split a chicken breast for a meal. 'Nuff said. Go to
the Garden page for a slideshow of our 2008 garden. |
