Home is where the heart is, and this is my home. We garden
organically, raise chickens for eggs, and try to buy locally as much as
possible. It can be difficult because buying some things raised within one
hundred miles is beyond our ability to pay. But then, Boone, NC is close
by with some of the very wealthy, and they make prices go up. I can't
afford to pay $9 for a chicken when I can pay $4 at the grocery. But one
of my neighbors let's us pick blackberries; one gives us honey; and in a
good year, we raise most of our vegetables. The thing is you can buy
locally; maybe not everything but a lot. It takes a little work, but it's
worth it. |
| And, we get silly. Bruce Lee was one of our Sultan
roosters. Yes, he's perched on my husband's head. Billy and I traded him
for three Sultan hens. The Sultan originally came from Turkey, but almost
died out. A woman from the UK took some hens and roosters home with her
and bred them. My favorite layers are Rhode Island Reds, but my favorite
chickens are Silkies. They originated in China and were pets. They are
great brooders; they sit on the eggs until they hatch. They are also the
best mothers of all the chicken breeds. |

From left to right: Rosie the Silkie hen, Howie the dog,
my feet, and Scamper the cat. Rosie had a problem with the cold that
winter and spent it inside. She slept in a dog crate. It was amazing how
well the three of them got along. Rosie would try to steal Howie's dog
biscuits, and she did steal Scamper's dry food. I supervised. Now, that's
a joke. It's more like they supervised me. |
