| Why is it that when we call Earth by the name Gaia, we see
Gaia as a woman? I'm a woman, so even asking the question puzzles me. Of
course! Mother Earth. We are stewards of God's creation, and we're not
supposed to abuse her. Unfortunately, the dominate form of economics,
which is capitalism, will gobble up everything including Gaia. |

I live in a very rural part of the Appalachian Mountains
in northeast Tennessee. Every day I walk out my door and encounter the
best of Gaia. It does not matter what time of day or what time of the
year; she infuses me with joy and happiness and peace. But my heart breaks
at what humanity is doing to Gaia. Just two counties west of me, coal
corporations are using mountaintop removal. Just a little over one hundred
miles away, coal fired power plants are spewing soot, carbon dioxide, and
other noxious gases into the air we breathe. It will end one way or the
other. Either humanity must stop this destruction or Gaia will stop us. |
